Mapping with Leaflet

If you missed my <Code><Br> episode earlier this week you missed (imo) a great episode. I’ll share a link to the video at the end, but I spent the session raving about how great the Leaflet JavaScript library is for maps. I had it on my list to look into for a few months now and while having a layover recently I took the time to dig into it. I was – blown away. I’ve got a lot of experience over the years working with maps on the web. I really dig Google Maps, both the JavaScript library and APIs, and I spent some time as a developer evangelist for HERE helping others learn about their offerings. I’m obviously a bit biased but I really dug their offerings as... more →

John Snow’s Proximity Mapping

I’ve probably seen over 100 modern interactive visualizations of John Snow’s famous map of cholera victims during the 1854 cholera outbreak in Soho. John Snow’s map shows the locations of cholera deaths clustered around a water pump in Broad Street. The map helped to disprove the prevailing miasma theory on the spread of diseases and establish that cholera was actually spread by contaminated Maps Mania… more →

Mapping SpaceTime

I recently stumbled upon Time Map, an interactive map which attempts to show points of interest around a location by walking time. Enter a location into the Time Map and a venue category (eg pizza restaurants) and the map will display a series of concentric circles around your location, each of which represents a minute of walking time. All the nearby points of interest are overlaid on top Maps Mania… more →

Mapping the History of the Railway

Martin Brake has created a number of interactive maps which visualize the historical development of transport networks in Germany, London, Paris and Barcelona. His Timemap Timelines project provides an animated map for each featured city which shows how its transit network has grown over time. For example the screenshot above shows the development of the London Underground between 1858 and 1947. Maps Mania… more →

Mapping the Drift-backing of Refugees

‘Drift-back’ is a controversial practice which is used by some coast guard services, particularly in the Aegean Sea, to deter asylum seekers and prevent them from reaching their intended destination. It involves intercepting boats carrying asylum seekers within EU territorial waters, then forcing them back towards the country they departed from. This is sometimes allegedly done by loading Maps Mania… more →
